June 21, 2018
San Antonio College has received a scholarship gift from Sembradores of San Antonio, a local social and civic organization with a mission to provide assistance to deserving students pursuing higher education. Members of the Sembradores board met with Dr. Robert Vela, president of SAC, to make the check presentation.
For 30 years, since if formed its educational endowment in 1988, members of Sembradores have given funds to help Latino students who attend SAC full-time, have completed 24 college hours, and maintained a 3.0 grade point average.
In addition to supporting SAC, Joe Nick Garza, chair of the educational endowments committee, said Sembradores also provides scholarship gifts to:
- Our Lady of the Lake University
- St. Mary's University
- University of the Incarnate Word
- University of Texas at San Antonio
- UT Health San Antonio
- Palo Alto College
According to Alex Bernal, Sembradores board member and English professor at SAC, many of the scholarship recipients have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, and business people who also engage in civic work.
"They are well rounded citizens and also want to give back to the community," he said.
Sembradores holds two fundraising events each year to bolster their endowments, a gala in the fall and a fashion show in the spring.
In October at the next gala, Sembradores will honor Dr. Vela as their "Sembrador of the Year," for his contributions and involvement with the organization.
"Dr. Vela has been an ardent supporter - one of our champions," explained Bernal.
